About our comparisons

Sources and methodology

AmpHourLab compares portable power stations using published specifications, retailer pricing, and documented experience with one unit: the Pecron F5000LFP. Each table labels whether a figure is published, computed, or first-hand so you can use the comparison at the right level of confidence.

What we have used ourselves

We own the Pecron F5000LFP and document our used SunPower panel array. We paid $95 each for the 330W panels, or $1,140 for the twelve-panel array. That is the documented panel component of our build cost. Our first-hand evidence is the array and its purchase; idle draw and refrigerator runtime remain calculation topics rather than published measurements.

Where the numbers come from

How the calculations work

Price per watt-hour

Divide the current price by manufacturer-rated battery capacity in Wh. A $600 station rated at 1,000Wh costs $0.60/Wh. This illustrative example measures the price of rated capacity. It leaves usable AC energy, weight, warranty, and build quality for the buyer to compare separately. See the current value comparison.

Runtime

The ideal estimate is battery watt-hours divided by average load in watts. A 1,000Wh battery at a 100W average load gives 10 ideal hours. Actual runtime is shorter because usable capacity, inverter losses, idle draw, temperature, and operating settings matter. Our refrigerator table uses labeled assumed loads, so read each result as an estimate rather than a refrigerator test.

Solar recharge time

Divide rated battery capacity by maximum solar input for a best-case comparison. It assumes sufficient compatible panels and sustained input at the station’s limit; weather, shade, panel orientation, charging losses, and charging behavior can lengthen the real charge.

Panel string sizing

The string-sizing example compares a specific panel datasheet with a specific controller’s limits. Panel count depends on the module, controller, and conditions, so carry the same checks into any new pairing. Follow the equipment manuals and have an appropriately qualified installer check the design.

How we order the tables

The value table sorts price per watt-hour; camping sorts published weight; home backup compares capacity and output; the solar recharge table sorts computed best-case hours. These are focused comparisons rather than an overall testing score. Check the specifications that matter for your devices before buying.
